Workshops
Workshops are a great way to get a taste of music in just a day or two. Try something for the first time or add to your talents.
Upcoming workshops
Old-time finger style guitar
This workshop will examine the fingerpicking styles of two influential country guitarists; Maybelle Carter, and Merle Travis. Maybelle Carter's style utilized a thumb lead technique and brushed with the other fingers of her picking hand. Sometimes this is called "the Carter Scratch." We will explore the keys of C, G, and F major using such tunes as "Wildwood Flower," "Railroading on the Great Divide," and "The Wreck of the Old 97."
Merle Travis' influence on modern guitarists can be heard in the playing of the likes of Chet Atkins, and Doc Watson. We will examine his picking style in such songs as "I Am A Pilgrim," "Nine Pound Hammer" and his instrumental "Cannonball Rag."
We will also discuss how to arrange other pieces in both of these styles.
Cost per student is $20.00. Students will need to provide themselves with a plastic thumbpick. Use of fingerpicks is optional.
